About David Wallace
"I joined Gibson Sheat in October 2001 on returning to New Zealand from working in the banking and finance industry in the UK. I have experience in a full range of legal areas including employment, sports, property, commercial and litigation, however I have chosen to specialise in general commercial law and specifically in banking and finance recovery. I became a partner in November 2006."
Career to date
David has advised clients on a broad range of company and commercial matters. He has a special interest in the banking and finance sector, where he acts for several well-known banks and finance companies. Recently he has been specialising in mortgagee sales, an area where he has significant expertise across large lending ledgers.
David developed workflow software so clients can monitor every step of their recovery and brought property presenting to New Zealand so secured lenders pay less to realise their mortgages. David has more than a passing interest in the Bloodstock industry - knowledge and experience that has proved invaluable assisting our agri clients on many occasions.
My approach to working with my clients
I like to build a close relationship with all my clients and to have a real understanding of their business, and their goals for the business. Gibson Sheat looks to add value and we can only do that with this knowledge.
An instance when I've helped a client achieve a good result
I assisted a client to put processes in place to fine tune their operation. The outcome was streamlined processes and saved back-end costs.
The best piece of advice I've ever been given
My father put me on the right career path early when he said, "David, you'll never make a jockey."
What stimulates me
Helping my clients' businesses run smoothly and assisting them to get results. My clients view me as an integral part of their business. I like acting for clients who appreciate me and to whom I relate well.
I like a challenge, a recurring one is trying to locate different assets for lender clients - you wouldn't think a light plane could fly to Australia, or houses disappear from land!
What I enjoy outside of work
I love spending time with my wife and family. My other passion is thoroughbred breeding and racing, which my family are heavily involved in.
If I wasn't a lawyer I'd...
be a thoroughbred horse farmer.
