About Erica Carruthers
Career to dateAfter graduating from the University of Otago in 2009 with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media Studies, I worked at a boutique general practice law firm in Auckland, before moving to Masterton and joining the team at Gibson Sheat (formerly Logan Gold Walsh) in May 2014.
My legal experience encompasses residential and commercial conveyancing, subdivisions and property development, financing, commercial leases, business acquisitions and disposals, and trusts. I can also offer advice on Elder Law matters including Occupation Right Agreements, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Wills.
My recent workI have acted on a variety of conveyancing matters, including a number of acquisitions and disposals of local Wairarapa businesses. I have also provided advice on a wide range of commercial matters, from franchise agreements through to terms of trade and contracts for services.
More recently I have assisted various clients with completing their due diligence investigations in respect of residential, rural and commercial properties, including reviewing comprehensive Land Information Memorandums, titles, resource consents and leases.
Professional associations and community organisations
My approach to working with my clientsI take a relaxed approach with clients, which enables me to quickly build rapport and establish long lasting relationships centering on trust.
My most rewarding experience at workWorking on the sale of a Wellington business which involved a difficult landlord who was withholding their consent to the assignment of the lease for the business premises to the purchaser. I successfully managed to negotiate several variations to the terms of the lease to enable our client’s sale to proceed with the Landlord’s consent and settle within a tight time frame.
The best piece of advice I've ever been givenDon’t sweat the small stuff, shift your focus to the bigger picture.
What stimulates me?My competitive nature means that I relish the sense of satisfaction that comes with success, whether that’s at work or on the sports field.
What I enjoy outside of workPlaying sports and walking my naughty dog (who thinks he is a human). I also love spending time with family and friends and try and find as much time for this as possible.
If I wasn't a lawyer I'd...be an interior designer. I have always had a passion for architecture and design.
