He specialises in mortgage recovery work, acting for a major New Zealand banking group, and his expertise includes general property law, subdivisions and commercial property work, as well as residential and commercial conveyancing, and private client work, particularly creation and administration of trusts.
For a number of years, Ian has acted for a major Wellington property developer in all aspects of their residential subdivisions. He has drafted the full range of land covenants, easements, and leases for a wide range of clients.
My approach to working with my clientsI never take clients for granted. Every job is important and I treat every matter with care. I'm here to do a great job and to keep my clients informed along the way.
How I give my client a competive edgeThe nature of my practice is that I often handle large volumes of work. I enjoy the pressure of completing jobs in tight timeframes, while still getting great outcomes for my clients.
In recovery situations I regularly negotiate lower real estate commission rates for my clients. I also negotiate hard to get them a better sale price and to generate every last dollar I can on the sale of a property.
The best piece of advice I've ever been givenI didn't do particularly well in an exam one year at school and my father said to me, "We gave you the opportunity, it's up to you to take it". By that he meant that you have to take charge of your own destiny. I often say the same thing to my children, "You only get out of life what you are prepared to put in".
I love being busy and active. I enjoy talking to my clients and looking after them. Meeting deadlines also motivates me. I like to have jobs that I can start and complete quickly within the timeframes given.
