My Career to Date

I spent almost five years at Russell McVeagh in Auckland advising on corporate and finance transactions for listed companies, private equity firms and banks.  After a brief stint working on three international golf tournaments, I followed my interest in sports law to London.  I was fortunate to gain a wide range of in-house experience as legal counsel at IMG, one of the world’s largest sports agencies.  There I worked on a wide range of commercial matters related to live sports events and media distribution including sponsorship, media licensing, venue, ticketing, merchandising, talent appearances and operations.

Returning to the safety of home in the time of Covid, I joined Gibson Sheat’s commercial and sports law team in February 2021.  Here I apply the skills learned from working on some of the world’s largest sporting properties and on novel issues facing the sporting world for the benefit of our sport and recreation community.

In 2020 I completed a Masters of Laws in Sports Law and Practice, with a dissertation on the maternity rights of elite athletes.

My Recent Work

  • Advising on all aspects of live sports and cultural events – right from the high value sponsorship and media distribution deals, to the nuts and bolts of an event’s supplier and operational contracts
  • Advising national sports organisations on rule interpretations and travel policies in the Covid environment

Professional Associations and Community Organisations

  • Australia and New Zealand Sports Law Association
  • Past Board Member and Treasurer of Achilles New Zealand

My approach to working with my clients

To understand what my clients do and why they do it.  From my work as an in-house counsel, I have a true appreciation of the commercial realities my clients are facing.  I will give practical advice, highlighting all risks, but work with my clients to achieve the desired commercial outcome.

What stimulates me

Helping my clients enable change for the better, and setting up arrangements and systems to facilitate this.  My job satisfaction comes from seeing the behind the scenes work pay off.

What I enjoy outside of work

You’ll find me running on trails, dragging my partner tramping up mountains or hacking my way round a golf course with my hockey swing.  Then we’ll be finding a local café for some of the good stuff or returning home to sample his latest Ottolenghi inspired creation.
