When Andrew Little joined Gibson Sheat Lawyers in March 2024, he described his return to private practice as a natural next step and a way to bring his passion for justice, problem solving, and public service back into the courtroom.

A year and a half later, we are proud to congratulate Andrew on his election as Mayor of Wellington.

Andrew’s election reflects the same leadership, integrity, and calm presence we saw every day at Gibson Sheat. His thoughtful approach to challenges, his commitment to fairness, and his belief in making systems work better for people left a lasting impression on our team and our clients.

Leadership grounded in law and service

During his time with us, Andrew worked across employment, Māori affairs and public law matters. He brought a rare perspective shaped by decades of experience in advocacy, leadership, and policymaking.

Colleagues describe his style as measured and collaborative, always focused on clarity, purpose, and practical outcomes that make a real difference for clients and communities alike.

A lasting legacy at Gibson Sheat

Andrew often spoke about the importance of access to justice and about creating a profession that is inclusive and supportive. Those ideas continue to influence how we think about the role of law in our communities and the shared responsibility we have to make it more accessible for everyone.

Public service has long been part of Gibson Sheat’s story. In the 1950s, Sir John Marshall balanced partnership in the firm with his political career and went on to serve as Prime Minister of New Zealand. His example set a precedent for combining legal expertise with a commitment to public life. Andrew continues that tradition, showing how the skills of a lawyer can help shape policy, strengthen institutions, and serve the community beyond private practice.

His insight, integrity, and humour enriched our firm culture (and our daily five-minute quiz). We will miss his presence, but we are excited to see him bring the same steady leadership to Wellington.

Leading Wellington with fairness and focus

As Wellington faces challenges in infrastructure, housing, and transport, Andrew’s focus on fairness and practical problem solving will serve him well. His deep understanding of how law and government intersect gives him a strong foundation for leading change with balance, transparency, and accountability.

We are confident his commitment to improving systems and supporting people will continue to benefit the city he now leads.

Congratulations, Andrew, and thank you for your contribution to Gibson Sheat, to your clients, and to the wider legal profession. It has been a privilege to work alongside you. We wish you every success as you serve Wellington and its people with the same integrity and heart you brought to our firm.
