claire byrne - Partner

The Professional
Claire came to Gibson Sheat from Southall and Associates where she worked from 1999 until the firms merged in January 2002. Claire was previously a partner in Waikato law firm Harkness Henry and has also worked in the public service industry.
Claire has experience in company and commercial law, residential and commercial conveyancing, debt collection and employment law.
Claire leads Gibson Sheat's Private Client and Franchising teams.

Qualifications: LLB

The Person
Claire is a mother to three children and successfully manages her family and legal careers. She loves the company of good friends, good food, wine, reading and the beach.

The Professional
David is a partner in Gibson Sheat's commercial team.

David has worked on a wide range of commercial transactions, including trusts, business sales and purchases and refinancing. He also specialises in mortgage recovery, acting for several large banking clients.

The Person
David has an interest in thoroughbred breeding and racing and owns a number of horses.

When David is not following his horses, he enjoys golf, all sports and good food and wine.

ian mclauchlan - Partner

The Professional
Ian has many years experience in all aspects of mortgage recovery work, extensive subdivisional and building management experience.
Ian has been involved in a number of subdivision projects but now specialises in mortgage recovery work.

Qualifications: LLB

The Person
Ian is a man of action and gets things done. He often starts work extremely early in order to fit in a round of golf after work. Conveniently he lives next to a golf course.
Ian is interested in many sports as well as golf, particularly cricket and rugby. He also enjoys gardening, and along with his wife is developing a formal garden at their home. Ian has four children.

mike gould - Partner

The Professional
Mike joined Gibson Sheat in 1985, becoming a partner in 1987. He has extensive experience in employment law, having appeared in the Supreme Court in the first employment law case to reach that Court. He also undertakes a variety of general commercial legal work.

Mike is well-organised, and well-adjusted. He’s a dedicated family man with three daughters.

peter hobbs - Partner

The Professional
Peter first joined Gibson Sheat in 1999 and returned in 2001, after two years as a commercial manager in the telecommunications industry, becoming a partner in 2005.

Peter has a background in criminal and commercial litigation but his focus is now on general commercial law, sports law and tribunal work.

In addition to his commercial work Peter has advised a number of not-for-profit organisations on their structure and rules and in particular their dispute and disciplinary practices. Peter has also appeared in disciplinary hearings for national sporting and industry bodies.

The Person
After travelling the world and trying his hand at many a job Peter settled on the law.
A devoted family man, Peter enjoys spending time with family and friends. Like many others at Gibson Sheat, he also enjoys his golf and being on or by the water.

dave robinson - Partner

The Professional
Dave has been practising law since 1971 initially handling all manner of work including criminal and civil litigation, conveyancing and a wide range of commercial work.

Since becoming a partner at Gibson Sheat in 1977 Dave has specialised in commercial law. He is well versed in all aspects of company and commercial work, as well as acting for private clients.

Dave has handled company mergers, acquisitions and disposals, and an extensive range of commercial contract and licensing work, computer and service agreements and local authority work. Past work includes development and leasing agreements involving assisting a local property developer with projects for the Crown in Lower Hutt, and for several high profile companies in Auckland, Porirua and Christchurch.

Dave has co-ordinated multi-national negotiations in a number of commercial matters in which he has acted.

The Person
Dave has two adult children and is well known for his unusual combination of intellect and handyman skills, having built his own house.

nigel moody - Partner

The Professional
Nigel joined the commercial division in 1987 and has been a partner since 1991. Nigel's experience includes company law and corporate governance issues, mergers and acquisitions, prospectuses and securities law, joint ventures and other related contracts, commercial property developments and leasing.

The Person
Nigel grew up in Days Bay and now lives across the harbour in Oriental Bay.

Living near water all his life has instilled a love of sailing in Nigel, although he does not get the chance to get out on the water as often as he likes.

A highlight of his personal life has been completing two Sydney to Hobart Yacht races. Nigel also enjoys golf, tennis, surfing and skiing and well as spending time with his four children.

tony southall - Partner

The Professional
Tony has been in general practice since 1979. He specialises in commercial law with an emphasis on property, business and personal structuring [trusts], business acquisitions, sales, drafting and negotiation of the full range of business contracts (from IT to franchising) and restructuring.

Tony is Gibson Sheat's Chairman of Partners.

The Person
Tony is personable, practical and a real people person.
Tony is married to Linda and they have two teenage children. He loves Wellington and the Wairarapa (where he spends a lot of his leisure time) and is passionate about most sports, especially the All Blacks and of course his golf!
 
Tony gives a lot of his time to good causes and is Deputy Chairman of the Cancer Society in Wellington.

nigel stirling - Partner

The Professional
Nigel has been at Gibson Sheat from 1984 and from 2000 he has been based in the Wellington office. He specialises in commercial and sports law, but has experience in many other areas, including intellectual property, Maori sector, transport, trusts and property, company and business law.

His busy sports law practice involves the full range of legal issues that confront sport and recreation bodies and athletes including areas such as sponsorship, athlete engagement, intellectual property, event management, constitutional, tribunal and contract work. His clients include many prominent national, regional and local organisations within the sport and recreation sector in New Zealand.

Nigel's career highlights at Gibson Sheat have been establishing the Wellington office and leading the firm's expertise and development as a pre-eminent advisor in the New Zealand sports law sector.

The Person
Nigel was born in Christchurch, grew up in Lower Hutt but has lived in Wellington City since 1995.

With a background of voluntary contribution in clubs and regional organisations, Nigel is a current or former director of several companies and not for profit organisations including The Lawlink Group Limited (currently chairman), Sport Wellington Region (currently Deputy Chairman), Atiawa Toa FM Limited and Wellington Rugby Football Union.

On weekends Nigel loves to relax in his seaside bach at Paekakariki, with his wife Kaye and their young children. There he enjoys fishing from his kayak, running on the beach and trying to stem the tide of global warming. Nigel enjoys travel, rating Turkey and Fiji as his favourite places to visit.

A full sports addict, particularly the adventurous kind, Nigel has bungy jumped in Queenstown and has run a marathon. His personal ambition is to remain fit and healthy and to continue to enjoy the wonderful New Zealand outdoors as much as possible with his family.

andy soper - Associate

The Professional
Andy is a senior solicitor in our Commercial Team. He entered legal practice in 1993 and has a wide range of experience in property, trusts, commercial law, estates, family law and employment law. Andy specialises in small business work, commercial property and trusts.

The Person
Andy has four young children who keep him occupied when he’s not working. He is actively involved with the Hutt Playcentre Association and the board of Naenae College. Andy keeps fit by biking to and from work.

The Professional
Shelley joined Gibson Sheat in 2004, she previously worked for three years as a commercial solicitor with another Wellington law firm.
Shelley has experience in a wide range of commercial areas including company law, business structuring, intellectual property, franchising and sports law.

The Person
Shelley has a keen interest in horses and has a few of her own. In her spare time she regularly competes at various equestrian events.

Fiona joined Gibson Sheat's Wellington Commercial team in January 2004. Previously Fiona had worked as a legal editor for various publishing houses in Wellington, London and Austria. Immediately prior to joining Gibson Sheat Fiona spent two years as a solicitor in an Auckland law firm.

The Person
Fiona attended Victoria University in Wellington. She loves spending time with her toddler son. She also skis and her family go tramping when they can.

danielle dufty - Solicitor

The Professional
In 2005 Danielle obtained a Bachelor of Laws to complement her Bachelor of Commerce and Administration from Victoria University. She joined Gibson Sheat's commercial team after returning from her OE in 2005.
Since then Danielle has assisted in a wide variety of legal work, including residential conveyancing, trust and company formation, commercial leasing, and employment law.

The Person
An avid sports participant and spectator who will try her hand at anything, Danielle was a New Zealand Universities Hockey Representative and is now attempting to complete a half marathon or two. She has travelled throughout Hong Kong and China. Danielle likes adventures, swimming, snowboarding and a good read.

The Professional
Rose graduated from the University of Otago in 2006 with a Bachelor of Laws alongside a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology

Rose joined Gibson Sheat in 2007 from an in-house role at a major telecommunications company.

The Person
Rose loves all sports, both as a competitor and a spectator, but is particularly passionate about hockey and rugby. As a supporter of the Blues (but don't hold that against her) Rose is a keen follower of the Super 14 and likes to get to games whenever she can. When she's not watching sport Rose likes getting in amongst it at quiz nights, playing indoor netball and going for an early morning run. Her current goal is to complete a half marathon before the end of the year.

david rutherford - Consultant

The Professional
David joined Gibson Sheat in December 2004. A former partner at Bell Gully, he has over 10 years legal experience. He has over 15 years senior management experience as a senior executive in building materials (Fletcher Challenge) and agricultural servicing (Wrightson) businesses. He has also been CEO of the NZRU. At Gibson Sheat, David advises a wide range of clients on various commercial and sports matters.

The Person
David is involved in sport and the community at many levels. He is President/Chairman of Eastbourne Rugby Club, a trustee of Special Olympics New Zealand and a director of the Shakers Netball franchise. He has been a Director of the Paralympics New Zealand. He is a past trustee and current mentor for First Foundation, and is a pro bono advisor to many Pacific Island rugby bodies including the Pacific Islanders and the Samoan Rugby Union. He also teaches a Masters level Sports Law course at Victoria University.

martin montague - Partner

The Professional
Martin is a partner in our Lower Hutt office he has over 30 years general legal experience. Presently his work focuses on property and business transactions, leases and asset protection (family trusts). Two niche areas in which Martin has specialised are the motel industry and relationship property cases.

david sarginson - Partner

The Professional
David is a partner in the Lower Hutt office specialising in property law. He has been in private practice since 1976. His areas of expertise range from general property law, with an emphasis on subdivision and commercial property work to residential and commercial conveyancing, family trusts, local government and private client work.

One of David's key roles at Gibson Sheat involves supervising the residential conveyancing team. Most of that work is one-off property transactions but he is also involved in major land subdivisions and a complex unit title agreement.

David has been responsible for the firm's mortgage aggregation and brokering business (AMBL) as well as development of its automated conveyancing package (conveyIT), and the conveyIT network, a grouping of specialist conveyancing firms linked to the TradeMe Property website.

The Person
David, a father of three adult children, was born in Eastbourne where he still lives with his family. He likes to spend his weekends relaxing with his wife, playing and watching sport, and catching up with family and friends.

The highlight of David's sporting year is when he and a group of friends spend a week playing golf on the Gold Coast. David also plays tennis and likes walking, and mountain biking, around Eastbourne, and the surrounding hills and coastline.

Colette is a Solicitor in the Lower Hutt office specialising in property law. Colette graduated from Victoria University in 1996, and was admitted in 1997. She joined Gibson Sheat in 2008 from a management position with a legal publishing company in which she developed cutting-edge case law and current awareness services.

The Person
Colette was born in Lower Hutt, schooled in Hawke's Bay, travelled widely, and now lives in Karori with her husband and two children. She is an avid hockey player, having played premier hockey for the Victoria University of Wellington Hockey Club since 1991, and represented Wellington in both indoor and outdoor hockey. A "golfing widow", Colette also enjoys gardening, spending time with friends and family, and an annual camping holiday.

Paula is a Legal Executive at the Lower Hutt Office joining the Property Team in 2007 from the United Kingdom. She qualified as a Licensed Conveyancer & Commissioner for Oaths in England where it is recognised a Licensed Conveyancer is a specialist property lawyer, someone who is trained and qualified in all aspects of the law dealing with property.

Sue joined Gibson Sheat in April 2007. She came to us from a Marlborough law firm where she had worked as a Legal Executive for 20 years.

Paul is an experienced commercial litigation practitioner. He specialises in insolvency and acts for the Official Assignee, a number of New Zealand's leading insolvency practitioners, businesses, banks and Government Departments. edward cox - Partner

The Professional
Edward leads the Lower Hutt Commercial Litigation team. He has a wide commercial litigation practice including Commercial Dispute Resolution but specialises in Banking and Finance Recovery, Insolvency, and the Heavy Road Transport Industry.

Recent work includes advice to transport operators on Road User Charges audits, injunctions protecting suppliers from debtors relocating off-shore and large scale recovery strategies for secured creditors.

Edward loves the brilliant lifestyle that Wellington offers, especially our great outdoors. Edward is now into sailing; “there is no shortage of wind here.”

tim anderson - Associate

The Professional
Since admission in 1993, Tim has gained a wide variety of commercial and litigation experience in New Zealand and Southeast Asia. During his time in Indonesia he acted for clients in the energy, consulting, human resource development and property sectors. Before joining Gibson Sheat in February 2004, Tim headed the litigation team at a well respected provincial law firm.

At Gibson Sheat Tim specialises in civil and commercial litigation and has an active interest in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Tim has appeared at all levels of the court system. The highlight of his time at Gibson Sheat was a successful landmark employment appeal to the Supreme Court.

While Tim has a broad litigation practice, he has significant experience in employment, RMA, commercial property and IT/IP issues.

The Person
Tim graduated with both an LLB and a BCom from Canterbury University.

Tim speaks fluent Indonesian as well as several other Asian languages. He is married with three young children who occupy most of his spare time. In any remaining time Tim is into DIY, gardening and following sport.

te rau kupenga - Senior Solicitor

The Professional
Te Rau joined Gibson Sheat's Lower Hutt Litigation team in 2008. He has had a varied career to date, from practicing as a Crown prosecutor in Auckland to representing claimants in the Waitangi Tribunal. Recently Te Rau worked as Chief legal counsel to the Maori Trustee, advising the Trustee on Maori land, commercial, contract, property and trust law issues. At Gibson Sheat, Te Rau works in general commercial litigation and dispute resolution.

The Person
Te Rau was raised both in Auckland and on the East Coast, north of Gisborne. He is very passionate about his Marae and whanau; and his tribal language, history and customs.

Te Rau loves spending time with his wife, Fiona; he enjoys travelling, having recently returned to NZ from a summer trip to Argentina. Together with Fiona, he also enjoys taking long walks with his Golden Retriever puppy, Awhi.

On Friday mornings, you can see Te Rau on TVNZ's "Good Morning Show" where he shares his views on 'manly' topics as part of the "Men's Panel".

mercia reddy - Senior Solicitor

The Professional
Mercia’s broad legal experience ranges from commercial and civil litigation, alternative dispute resolution and criminal law, to her primary focus of Insolvency. Her in-depth knowledge of Insolvency and Recovery has allowed her to co-head Gibson Sheat’s internal Insolvency Practice. Mercia’s experience in Insolvency was utilised during a 2004 secondment to the Ministry of Economic Development, during which she played a key role in advising the new Insolvency Reform Bill. Mercia applies her uncompromising attitude and sound analytical approach to all aspects of insolvency, both internal and external. Her thorough understanding of Insolvency makes Mercia a key asset to Gibson Sheat.

The Person
Since being admitted to the bar in 1995, Mercia has worked in both New Zealand and the UK. In her previous positions she practiced as a Barrister working for Russell Fairbrother in Napier, has worked for Fitzherbert Rowe in Palmerston North, and spent time as a solicitor in London. Highlights of these roles included appearing in District and High Court jury trials, as well as a full range of commercial and civil matters.

When she’s not working, Mercia indulges in her creative side by painting and dabbling in interior design. To relax, Mercia enjoys socialising, watching rugby and cooking for friends.

Although David has dealt with many matters, his main background is criminal and civil litigation. He enjoys appearing in court and has achieved successful outcomes for many of his clients both in and out of court. David is looking forward to growing his commercial litigation experience with Gibson Sheat.

The Person
David is a keen sportsman, in particular enjoying soccer, touch rugby and golf. He is also pleased to be back in the "arts and culture capital" to entertain his interests in good food, excellent wine and fantastic music.

jonathan haig - Solicitor

The Professional
Jonathan graduated from Canterbury University in 2004 and worked for two years at a Nelson Law firm prior to joining Gibson Sheat in November 2006.
Since joining the Wellington litigation team Jonathan has been developing his interest in Insolvency Law and companies Act litigation.

Qualifications: LLB

The Person
Jonathan enjoys a variety of outdoor and sporting activities whenever the opportunity arises. At present he is more a generalist than a specialist but would like to improve at all his pursuits, particularly at golf and kitesurfing.

kate mcclymont - Solicitor

The Professional
Kate joined Gibson Sheat's Lower Hutt Litigation team in January 2006. Kate works in general commercial litigation and credit recovery, with some road transport and construction work included for good measure.
Kate’s natural aptitude for law combined with her positive and enthusiastic attitude, makes her a huge asset to Gibson Sheat.

The Person
Kate grew up in various small towns in the South Island before moving to London to take up an assistant teaching position. On returning to New Zealand Kate moved to Wellington and completed an LLB and a BA at Victoria University.

Kate has a bubbly personality and actively contributes to the social activities of the firm – both as organiser and participant. Kate, having been promoted from the position of Friday drinks monitor, and having provided tuition to the new drinks monitor on the finer points of the position requirements, now has her sights set on bigger and better things...

She has a passion for travelling but also loves the Wellington Region for its vibrant arts scene and outdoor opportunities.
