About Fiona Coughlan

Career to date

"I was admitted in 1996 and started out working as a legal editor for various publishing houses in Wellington, London and Austria. I then spent two years as a solicitor in an Auckland Lawlink firm before joining Gibson Sheat's Wellington Commercial team in January 2004."

Fiona is a senior solicitor with broad experience in commercial law. She has significant expertise in commercial property transactions and banking and finance.  Fiona has a special interest in and aptitude for Business Structuring and has acted for a wide range of mainly SME Businesses and Business Owners.

My recent work

Completing a commercial property purchase, drafting lease documantation with a complex security arrangement.

More recently I have been involved in banking and finance law with an interest in mortgagee recovery work.

Professional Associations and Community Organisations

I am a member of the Wellington Women's Lawyers Association.

My approach to working with my clients

I listen to my clients' problems and then guide them through an effective approach to achieve a great result.

Instances where I've achieved great results for my client

One file required the client to obtain an overseas investment consent for a land transaction. We were successful in overcoming difficulties and dealing with the Overseas Investment Office to obtain the consent.

Working on a large business sale which involved a lot of parties, dealing with several lenders and settling the deal within a tight time frame.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given

Whenever facing a difficult challenge my mother says "Go well" - meaning 'do your best.'

What stimulates me

The changing legal environment and variety of work. I enjoy dealing with clients and helping them achieve their goals.

What I enjoy outside of work

Spending time with my family and enjoying the outdoors. We love to go camping, skiing and visiting different parts of New Zealand.

If I wasn't a lawyer I'd be...

A travel writer, because I have a passion for writing and travel.
