About Nigel Stirling

Career to date
"I joined Gibson Sheat in 1984 as a commercial solicitor.  Over the years, I have gained a broad experience in a wide range of major transactions for clients (and even as a court lawyer undertaking a murder trial). I assisted to establish Gibson Sheat's Wellington office in 1999, and have been based here since then."

Nigel is a commercial partner based in our Wellington office.  He has extensive experience working for a wide variety of business, not for profit and individual clients.  Nigel's expertise covers advising, negotiating and drafting a diverse range of commercial contracts, but also encompasses many other areas, including:
  • intellectual property
  • Maori sector
  • transport
  • trusts
  • property
  • company and business law.
Nigel's passion is sports law. He maintains a busy practice in this sector, which covers the full range of legal issues that confront sport and recreation bodies and athletes, including sponsorship, constitutional and tribunal work. His clients include many prominent local, national, and regional and organisations within the sport and recreation sector in New Zealand.

Highlights
It was very satisfying establishing the Wellington office and seeing it grow. I also take great pride in having led the firm's development as a leading advisor in the New Zealand sports and recreation sector.

Professional Associations and Community Organisations
I am a current or former director of several companies and not for profit organisations including:
  • The Lawlink Group Limited (2001-2008, chairman for 5 years),
  • Sport Wellington Region (11 years, until 2007),
  • Atiawa Toa FM Limited (from 1994) and
  • Wellington Rugby Football Union (1996-2002).
For five years, I have been a judge for the Wellington Exporter of the Year awards - now part of the Wellington Gold Awards.

My approach to working with my clients
My approach is collaborative and tailored to suit my clients.

I understand the environments in which my clients operate and can deliver solutions that meet their needs. I aim for my clients to regard me as one of their trusted advisors and I am always prepared to "go the extra mile" to achieve the best possible outcomes for them.

An instance when I've given a client a real competitive edge
One of my major clients tells me that my knowledge and experience of their business and the sector in which they operate, enables me to be pro-active and to look around corners for them to add value to what they do. They know that I am always watching out for their interests.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given
On Saturday mornings when I was heading off to play sport, my Dad would tell me "watch the ball!"  This simple, all encompassing advice is very much about being prepared and ensuring that I focus on what is in front of me, so that I can respond appropriately and do my very best in every situation.

What stimulates me
The opportunity to engage in a wide variety of interesting commercial work for great clients is very stimulating. I feel very fortunate that, I spend a lot of my time working in the vibrant sport and export sectors.  Another bonus is that I have met many energetic and innovative people along the way.

Outside of work, I find spending time with my family and my friends as well as getting stuck into a project or a goal - whether it's around the house, the garden, or in sport - stimulating. I also relish the opportunity to try new things.

What I enjoy outside of work
I love the outdoors and participate in a number of sporting and recreational activities including running, fishing, kayaking, golf and the gym.

I enjoy the variety of the Wellington lifestyle - there's always so much happening in our vibrant city.  I also enjoy spending time with my lovely wife Kaye and our two young children at our ramshackle beach house, which we escape to at weekends wherever possible.

If I wasn't a lawyer, I'd be...
A farmer or adventurer because of my love of the outdoors.
