About John Steel

My career to date
John joined Gibson Sheat as a partner on 1 September 2014.  Prior to that he was a partner at Harkness Law Limited. John has had over 20 years experience in both the corporate environment and private practice working in the areas of property, leasing, financing, development, hotel management, company and commercial law.  He has also held various company secretary roles within New Zealand particularly in the agricultural and venture capital sectors and is currently the fund secretary for Fairfax New Zealand Limited. Before returning to New Zealand in 1997, John spent several years in London working in the financial services sector.

My recent work
Acting for the Wellington Company (Ian Cassels); including the Willis Street Central project, sale of 50 Manners Street, sale of 46-51 Tory Street leased to ANZ, acquisition of 95 Customhouse Quay, 101-107 Manners Street and the Manthel Building, Wakefield Street leased to Xero.

  • Acting for the directors of a 32 Unit development (Tattoo Apartments), Abel Smith Street;
  • Acting for the developers of a 34 Unit development (Canvas Apartments), Willis Street;
  • Acting for Heritage Property Group on the sale of its heritage building portfolio.

My approach to working with my clients
I have a three step approach. Understanding what it is the client wants, putting the client at ease and delivering sound pragmatic advice in a timely manner.

Most rewarding experience I have had at work
Completing my first multi-unit development and attending the roof shout.

What stimulates me
Working closely with a client on a big project, sharing the experience and delivering a successful outcome.

What I enjoy outside of work
I enjoy travelling and my bucket list continues to grow.  I have a regular tee-off time at my golf course, catching up with friends, watching my kids play sport, reading and going to the movies.

If I wasn’t a lawyer I would be
A foreign travel correspondent or manager of a resort in some far flung part of the world, preferably near a golf course.

My specialist areas
Commercial property in particular unit title developments, acquisitions, sales, financing and leasing.
