About Callum Reid

Career to date

“I have practised as a commercial dispute resolution lawyer, specialising in insolvency and restructuring, for over 20 years.  I have undertaken challenging roles in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia before joining Gibson Sheat.  I draw on my overseas experience to better serve the needs of my clients.”

Callum trained and qualified in New Zealand in 1988 before working for Nabarro Nathanson, a leading law firm in London, and also Simpson Grierson in Auckland.  He was a partner of Norton White, a boutique commercial law firm in Sydney, and a partner in Duncan Cotterill’s Sydney Office before establishing his own specialist insolvency and restructuring practice in Sydney in 2009.

In his roles, Callum has acted for some of New Zealand and Australia’s major banks and financiers and leading insolvency practitioners in both countries.  He has extensive experience in advising on complex litigation and insolvency issues, and is adept at achieving the best possible commercial outcomes for his clients.

My recent work
  • Acting for a major New Zealand property developer in a proposed scheme of arrangement and in defending bankruptcy proceedings brought against the developer in Australia.
  • Acting for liquidators in pursuing voidable transaction claims and creditors in defending claims.
  • Acting for secured creditors in complex claims involving the exercise of securities and guarantees.
Professional associations and community organisations
  • Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and Federal Court of Australia
  • Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales
  • Member of the Banking and Financial Services Law Association of Australia and New Zealand
  • Member of RITANZ (Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association of NZ)
  • Committee member - Point Howard Residents' Association.
My approach to working with my clients

I am here to help my clients by utilising my professional expertise.  To be effective, I gain a clear understanding of their business objectives as early as possible, and work collaboratively with them and other professionals to achieve their objectives.

An instance where I've given a client a real competitive edge

In London, my pro bono work included representing Death Row inmates in Jamacia who brought appeals to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.  Working with Senior Counsel in London, we were successful in one appeal where the murder verdict was reduced to manslaughter, thereby saving the inmate’s life.  It taught me the importance of legal team work and how effective a legal team can be.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given

Treat others as you would like to be treated (from my parents, from an early age).

What stimulates me?

Working in a team with others to achieve the best possible outcomes.

What I enjoy outside of work

Time with my wife and family.  With three young daughters, they keep me fully occupied when I am home, and it is a pleasure and privilege being their Dad.

If I wasn't a lawyer I'd...

be a professional musician (if I only had enough talent!).  I studied piano and classical music through to the end of secondary school and loved it.  By then, I recognised my limitations and found other things I was better at doing.  I still enjoy music as an interest.
