About Andy Soper

Career to date

"I entered legal practice in 1993 and joined Gibson Sheat in 2000, becoming an associate in 2009."

Andy is a key member of our Commercial Team specialising in small business work, trusts and company and commercial law.  Andy also has a wide range of experience in property law, including retirement village and childcare centre sales and purchases, as well as a variety of personal legal work.

Professional  Associations and Community Organisations

I am actively involved with the Hutt Playcentre Association.

I am a member of BNI (Business Network International).

My approach to working with my clients

Communication is vital! I know this is a cliché, but that's because it is so true. I make sure I understand what my clients need and that they, in turn, understand my advice. I don't use legal jargon.

The most rewarding experience I've had at work

Completing a multi-million dollar business deal for an entrepreneurial client; protecting his interests and taking care of the intricate details so that he got the outcome he wanted.

The best piece of advice I've ever been given

"Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings" as the poet said. When my daughter was about three, I was hurriedly ironing my shirt for work one morning when she said, "Daddy you shouldn't leave things to the last minute." Now I iron all my shirts a week in advance.

What stimulates me

I love to get results for people. I enjoy solving problems and taking away the worry and hassle for clients.

I once drove two hours out of town at short notice to meet with a client and his staff to deal with an industrial relations crisis on their turf.

What I enjoy outside of work

Parenting mainly. I have four children, aged nine to 16, which certainly keeps me busy! I love following their achievements, as well as camping and get-togethers with family and friends. I enjoy reading a wide range of books.

If I wasn't a lawyer I'd be...

A consultant in 'plain English', because I have a passion for words. I like to help people say what they want to say.
