About Andy Soper
What stimulates me
I love to get results for people. I enjoy solving problems and taking away the worry and hassle for clients.
The most rewarding experience I’ve had at work
Completing a multi-million dollar business deal for an entrepreneurial client; protecting his interests and taking care of the intricate details so that he got the outcome he wanted.
My approach to working with my clients
Communication is vital! I know this is a cliché, but that’s because it is so true. I make sure I understand what my clients need and that they, in turn, understand my advice. I don’t use legal jargon.
An instance when I went the extra mile for a client
I once drove two hours out of town at short notice, to meet with a client and his staff to deal with an industrial relations crisis on their turf.
What I enjoy outside of work
Parenting mainly. I have four children, aged seven to 14. I love following their achievements, as well as camping and get-togethers with family and friends. I enjoy reading a wide range of books.
If I wasn’t a lawyer I’d be…
A consultant in ‘plain English’, because I have a passion for words. I like to help people say what they want to say.
The most memorable book I’ve ever read
The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. This is a hard book to put down; probably the original ripping yarn and still one of the best.
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given
"Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings" as the poet said. When my daughter was about three, I was hurriedly ironing my shirt for work one morning when she said, “Daddy you shouldn’t leave things to the last minute.” Now I iron all my shirts a week in advance.
Professional associations with which I am involved
I am on the board of Naenae College and am actively involved with the Hutt Playcentre Association.
