Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards 2011

Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards 2011

The gala awards dinner was held on 25 May at the Wellington Town Hall, with a sell-out crowd celebrating sporting success in the capital.

Congratulations to all the finalists, in particular the finalists in the Gibson Sheat Lawyers Coach of the Year category.

  • Matt Calcott (football)
  • Ricki Herbert (football)
  • Gary Hurring (swimming)
  • Stephen Kearny (rugby league)

It was very exciting for us again to announce that Ricki Herbert was the winner of our category. He also went on to win the supreme Sportsperson of the Year Award for the second year running.  He is the third person to achieve this feat in the 31-year history of the awards. Others being Jeremy Coney (1985/86) and John Gallagher (1987/88).

Ricki could not be at the ceremony to accept his award in person as he is in camp with the All Whites in Auckland.  He has said "I am really proud to be a part of the Wellington sporting landscape, Wellington is my home now, as it is the home of football.” When asked what it meant to join the likes of Coney and Gallagher Ricki said “it’s a prestigious group of people to be alongside!”

Congratulations Ricki!
